  • I wish I was more than a sprinter…

I am a sprinter – no cross-country ‘running’ in my life.  Ever.  I start off doing something, go like gang-busters for a while… then blah.  I poop out.  Lose steam… and that my friends is where I am.

    I am SICK. OF. BOXES!

I’m not sure why, but someone had the impression I was done w/ all 400 boxes.  Yes, you read that right – all 400 boxes.  Don’t you just wish you were me?  No?  I don’t blame you.

    6 people,  2300 sq, 1 work shop, 1 – 2 car garage, 12 years, 1 funeral = 400 boxes of assorted, ahem, *crap*.

This is where we were when the movers piled us high w/ our ‘treasures’.

I worked like a mad woman for about a week.  And as of yesterday, this is where I am.

    I feel good about life.

Although I don’t particularly ‘like’ the cedar chest that we are using as a coffee table (I honestly loathe the smell of cedar and every time I open it I gag), I feel uber good that its getting used (its always been something ‘off to the side’ in my life).  My great grandfather made it.  My Mom gave me 2 ‘thumbs-up’ and I’ve  been toying w/ painting it.  Opinions?

And then I go to the 3rd garage and see this…

I think I am going to need a trainer for this.  Its going to take more energy than just a ‘sprint’ & I don’t want it to take 3 yrs.

    Oh dear.

  • I know that feeling well. Paint, no, stain maybe. :)

  • Honey, I moved into my house 10+ years ago; and I STILL have boxes in my garage! Leave ‘em be. And someday when you feel like you want a surprise or two, get to opening them up. It’ll be like Christmas… or a trip down memory lane… or make you laugh at what you used to think you couldn’t live life without.

Do you ever wonder whether we own all this stuff or if it actually owns us? I do.

Oh, and I love the cedar chest, just like it is!

  • Another vote for leave the chest as is! Don’t paint!

You made me chuckle over the cedar smell. We always laugh, because when we smell cedar, which smells like mothballs, we think of my Grandmother. She believed in those mothballs and had them all over her house, she smoked, and she wore Avon. Those smells, well… now you know!

I’ve been in this house almost 8 years. Last year I finally found (in a box) some things I had been looking for. Don’t sweat it.And I learned I must be a sprinter too! Love ya! Tracy

  • Oh your cedar chest is beautiful! I don’t think I would paint it/

I do think that you are doing great, you have a place to sit and relax after a long days work. You will get to the boxes with time. I know its tough to make changes and to have to decide what should go where, its all about time!

Good luck with the race, just know that it does not always go to the one who is first out. Give it time and you will find your stride!

  • I love the chest and that you’re using it as a coffee table. I would do that if I had one. Don’t paint it!

  • Ahhh, boxes boxes boxes. I’m opposite of you right now. I’m wishing our house would sell & itching to pack things up. And our house now is small so there is a lot of things boxed in storage that I would like to see again.

I’m all for painting cedar – its not my favourite either! An nice black stain or something to still show the wood grain but cover up the smell & color? Dunno – I would try it!

Put your feet up, on the cedar chest and call it a day. You can sprint thru a few more boxes tomorrow!

  • I don’t envy you at all Gina… :o   I honestly don’t know HOW we got all 31,000 lbs of our stuff unpacked and put tog… it’s a blur now.. LOL  just keep thinking of the all done time.. :)   wish I lived closer so I could come help!

  • I think you[‘ve made great progress-I’m like you, I go gangbusters and then peter out-dh will keep on going and going and then get cranky and irritable and all put out. I vote for some time off in your nice unpacked room and then maybe in a few days go back to unpacking.

  • You’re up to it, my friend.  Just not – as you say, in one day!  I too found there were a few “mystery boxes” which remained a year after we moved in.  As I did not seem to be missing anything I was sorely tempted to give them to the thrift store, sight unseen but then curiosity got the best of me.

I love the cedar chest, love the smell.  Somehow reminds me of my mother.  Now that you’ve taken photos of it in its original state (so can be refered too and scrapbooked about, you must make it the way that YOU want it.  The only reason to keep it pristine would be for value if you had intentions of ever selling it.

It is SO exciting watching you move into your new house.  Thx for sharing.

  • I sooo hate moving girl!!!
